The short answer.
Hiring an India-based marketing agency for US or UK work can be a sound decision if you plan for three things before you sign: a fixed daily window of shared working time, read-only access to accounts that stay in your name, and claims you have checked on platforms the agency does not control. Most failures we hear about come from skipping one of those, not from geography.
We are writing this as an India-based agency, so read it with that in mind. Everything below is something you can check yourself, and the questions in the last chapters work just as well on an agency in Manchester or Ohio as on one in Pune.
- 01 · TIMEAgree a daily overlap window
- 02 · PEOPLEMeet who will do the work
- 03 · ACCESSRead-only, in your accounts
- 04 · CONTRACTIP, notice and handover in writing
- 05 · PROOFVerify claims off their website
Each check is explained below, with what “good” looks like.
What you can genuinely gain.
The usual pitch is cost. That is real, but it attracts the weakest agencies, and we will not quote prices here. These are the advantages that hold up once a project is running.
Work moves while you are offline
Pune is ahead of both London and New York. A brief you send at the end of your afternoon can be worked on during the Indian day and be waiting for you the next morning. For research, writing and technical fixes, that hand-off can shorten the cycle from request to review, but only if your brief is complete before you log off.
Senior attention, if you ask for it
A well-run agency in India can put an experienced specialist on a mid-sized account rather than a junior. That is not automatic. It depends on the agency, and you should test it by asking to meet the person who will do the work, not the person who sells it.
Whichever advantage matters to you, the basic disciplines of good SEO work do not change with location: a technical foundation, content that answers what buyers ask, and authority earned honestly.
The real risks, and which are about India.
Some risks are genuinely about distance. Others are about any agency, and blaming geography for them lets the real cause off the hook. It helps to separate them before you decide.
| Risk | Is it about distance? | How to handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Little or no shared working time | Yes, especially for the US West Coast | Agree a fixed overlap window and written response times before you sign |
| Slow decisions because questions wait overnight | Partly | One named contact on each side; questions batched in a shared tracker |
| Hard to enforce a contract across borders | Yes | Pay monthly, not far ahead; keep accounts and IP in your name from day one |
| Work passed to unnamed subcontractors | No, but common in cheap offshore offers | A contract clause that requires disclosure and your consent |
| Link packages and other shortcuts | No | Ask how authority will be earned; refuse any bought-link plan |
| Reports full of rankings, empty of enquiries | No | Agree the business measures in month one |
| Personal data leaving your jurisdiction | Yes | Share as little personal data as the work needs; see chapter 08 |
Only three of the seven risks are about distance. The other four come with any agency and are handled the same way: clear measures, clear access rules and a contract you have actually read. The cold email promising page-one rankings in weeks is a warning sign wherever it comes from; chapter 11 covers what Google says about it.
How much of your day you will share.
India Standard Time is five and a half hours ahead of UTC all year, and India does not use daylight saving time. The US and the UK do, on different dates, so the gap between your city and Pune changes twice a year. In 2026 the UK moved its clocks on 29 March and 25 October; the US moved on 8 March and 1 November.

Pale band: a 09:00–18:00 Pune day. Coloured bar: your 09:00–17:00 day converted to IST (bars that cross midnight wrap to the left). Offsets: London UTC+0 / +1, New York UTC−5 / −4, Los Angeles UTC−8 / −7, Pune UTC+5:30.
The chart is the honest picture of a plain office day on both sides. London shares the Indian afternoon. New York and Los Angeles share nothing unless someone moves. That is why the overlap has to be agreed, not assumed. This is what a modest agreed late window in Pune does:
| Your city | Pune is ahead by | Pune 09:00–18:00 | Pune window to 21:00 by agreement |
|---|---|---|---|
| London, winter | 5 h 30 | 09:00–12:30 your time | 09:00–15:30 your time |
| London, summer | 4 h 30 | 09:00–13:30 your time | 09:00–16:30 your time |
| New York, winter | 10 h 30 | none | 09:00–10:30 your time |
| New York, summer | 9 h 30 | none | 09:00–11:30 your time |
| Chicago, winter / summer | 11 h 30 / 10 h 30 | none | 09:00–09:30 / 09:00–10:30 |
| Los Angeles, winter / summer | 13 h 30 / 12 h 30 | none | none; an 08:00 call lands at 21:30 / 20:30 IST |
The weeks when the gap moves
Because the US and UK change clocks on different Sundays, there are a few weeks each spring and autumn when your usual meeting time shifts against Pune. In 2027 the UK changes on 28 March and 31 October, and the US on 14 March and 7 November. Book recurring calls in your own time zone, let the agency adjust, and put those four dates in both calendars now.
The time-zone overlap planner.
Pick your city, the date you care about and the hours you would happily take a call. The planner shows the window you would share with a team in Pune, in your time and in IST. It runs entirely in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
Shared window: calculating…
Choose your city and hours above.
If the planner shows less than an hour, that is workable, but only with a written rhythm: a shared tracker, a weekly written update and one fixed call. If it shows none, decide now who moves. Do not leave it to goodwill.
Communication and reporting to expect.
Offshore relationships usually fail slowly, through small silences. Write the communication rules down before work starts, then judge the agency on whether it keeps them.
What we would put in writing
- One named contact on each side, with a named back-up for leave and holidays. Indian public holidays and yours will not line up, so share both calendars in month one.
- A response time for ordinary questions, such as one business day, and a separate one for urgent issues like a broken form or a site outage.
- A short written update every week: what was done, what is next, what is blocked and who it is blocked on.
- A monthly report tied to the business measures you agreed, not only rankings and traffic. Our guide to tracking website leads from first visit to CRM covers what those measures can look like.
- Calls recorded or summarised in writing the same day, so the person who missed the call is not working from memory.
Responsiveness is the thing clients notice first, and it is fair to ask for evidence of it. One of our clients, Leopard Project Controls in Florida, wrote in a Clutch verified review on 3 July 2024: “Prolinkage was very responsive and always ready to get on a call if necessary.” Ask any agency for reviews that mention communication, then read them on the platform itself.
Data access: least privilege, your accounts.
The single most protective rule is simple: every account belongs to you, and the agency is a user on it. Your domain, your Google Analytics 4 property, your Search Console property, your ad accounts and your website login should all be owned by your business. If an agency offers to “set up analytics for you” in its own account, say no. When the relationship ends, you keep the history.
The second rule is least privilege: give each person the lowest level of access that lets them do the job, and raise it only for a task that needs it.
| System | Start with | Raise only when |
|---|---|---|
| Google Analytics 4 | Viewer or Analyst, with “no cost metrics” and “no revenue metrics” restrictions if they are not needed | They must change events or key events (Marketer) or property settings (Editor). Administrator stays with you. |
| Google Search Console | Restricted user (view rights on most data) | They need to submit sitemaps or validate fixes (Full user). Owner stays with you. |
| Website (CMS) | A personal named login, not a shared one | A scoped change is agreed; remove the higher role after it ships |
| Ad accounts | Read-only | They are hired to manage spend |
| CRM | Usually none; share counts, not records | A specific measurement task needs it, and you have checked the data protection points below |
Google’s GA4 help describes the Viewer role as able to “see settings and data” and reserves user management for Administrators, which is why that role should never leave your business. In Search Console, only owners can add or remove users.
Three habits that cost nothing
Never send passwords by email or chat; invite named users instead. Keep a one-page list of who has access to what. And on the day a contract ends, remove every agency user, then check the list again a week later. Our conversion tracking work starts with exactly this access review, because it is where most measurement problems begin.
Data protection: UK GDPR, GDPR and India’s DPDP Act.
This chapter is a practical outline, not legal advice. If your work involves meaningful personal data, ask your own adviser before you share it.
If you are in the UK or the EU
Sending personal data to a company in India is an international transfer under UK GDPR and the EU GDPR. India does not appear on the European Commission’s list of countries with an adequacy decision, and a February 2026 guidance page from ACCA notes that India does not currently have UK adequacy regulations either. In practice that means a transfer needs another safeguard, such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement (IDTA) or the UK Addendum to the EU standard contractual clauses. Your adviser will tell you which fits.
What India’s law adds
India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 received assent on 11 August 2023. The government notified the DPDP Rules, 2025 on 14 November 2025, with an eighteen-month period for phased compliance, according to the government’s own press backgrounder. Two sections matter most for foreign clients. Section 16 lets the Indian government restrict transfers to countries it notifies. Section 17(1)(d) covers the usual agency case: personal data of people outside India, processed by a company based in India under a contract with a person outside India. For that processing, the Act’s chapter on data fiduciaries’ obligations, its chapter on individuals’ rights and Section 16 do not apply, with two exceptions that stay in force: Section 8(1), which keeps the business deciding how data is used (the “data fiduciary”) responsible for compliance, including for processing done on its behalf, and Section 8(5), which requires “reasonable security safeguards to prevent personal data breach.”
So, in plain terms, your own law remains your main protection, and your contract should say how the agency stores, secures and deletes your data. India’s law still expects the agency to keep it secure.
The easier route: share less
Most SEO and content work needs very little personal data. Aggregate analytics, Search Console reports and page-level data are usually enough. Lead lists, customer emails and CRM exports usually are not needed. The best data protection decision is often not to send the file at all.
Contracts, payment and IP.
A cross-border contract is harder to enforce, so structure it so that, if things go wrong, you lose a month of work, not your accounts or your content.
What we would expect to see
- Scope and measures. What will be delivered each month, and which business measures the work is judged on.
- Intellectual property. A clause that assigns ownership of content, code, reports and designs to you once paid for, in writing. Do not rely on a default; the rules on who owns commissioned work differ between countries.
- Accounts. A statement that every account and asset is held in your name, and that the agency will hand over all files, logins it created and documentation on exit.
- Subcontracting. No work passed to third parties without disclosure and your consent.
- Notice. A short notice period, such as thirty days, rather than a long lock-in. A confident agency does not need to trap you.
- Governing law and disputes. Which country’s law applies, and how disagreements are settled. Ask your adviser what is realistic for you.
- Confidentiality and data. How your data is stored, who can see it, and when it is deleted.
Payment
Pay monthly, not a large sum up front for a long programme. Agree the invoicing currency and who pays transfer fees, and ask for a formal invoice with the agency’s registered company details. If they cannot provide one, that tells you something.
How to verify what an agency claims.
Every agency website, ours included, is a sales document. The way to check it is to look for the same claims somewhere the agency does not control, with dates attached.
- 01 · REVIEWSRead them on the platform
- 02 · BADGESCheck the issuer’s directory
- 03 · NUMBERSAsk for the source and both dates
- 04 · DATASee a live report on a call
- 05 · PEOPLESpeak to a current client
Check at least three of the five before you sign.
Reviews
Clutch says it “verifies reviews using reviewer-provided information & online research”, checking each reviewer’s identity and work history, and publishes reviews it cannot verify as “Not Verified”. So read the label, not just the stars. Our own Clutch verified review from Leopard Project Controls, published 3 July 2024, scored 5.0 overall and 5.0 on quality, schedule, cost and willingness to refer, for pay-per-click, SEO and social media work between January 2022 and March 2024. You can find it on Clutch rather than taking our word for it. On freelance marketplaces such as Upwork, ask for the profile link and read reviews alongside the job each one relates to.
Badges
A Google Partner badge is about Google Ads, not SEO. Google’s requirements include an optimisation score of at least 70%, a 90-day ad spend of 10,000 US dollars across managed accounts, and certified staff. Check any badge in the Google Partners directory, and note that listing is opt-in, so a missing entry is a question to ask, not proof of a lie.
Numbers
A real result has a metric name, a source, a property and two date ranges. This is how we state one: for FullTilt Team Development, GA4 organic-search key events rose from 13 to 234 between 1 May and 28 November 2024, compared with 2 October 2023 to 30 April 2024. A figure without dates is not evidence. AI assistants make this worse: when we asked ChatGPT about our own agency on 6 November 2026, it called us “worth shortlisting” but quoted an outdated 4.17x figure for a client result that our case study now states as 6.7x (Google Search Console “Generative AI features” impressions for fulltiltteams.com, 3.45K to 23.1K, last three months against the previous three, captured 4 September 2026). It also gave two different founding years taken from different directories. If an AI summary is part of your shortlisting, check every number it gives against a dated source.
Red flags that should end the conversation.
Google publishes advice on hiring an SEO in its “Do you need an SEO?” guide. Several of its warnings are blunt, and they apply to agencies everywhere. Google says nobody can promise a top ranking on Google, and that if an SEO promises its changes will put you in first place, you should find someone else. It warns against SEOs that claim a “special relationship” with Google, talk about link popularity schemes, or are secretive about what they intend to do, and it says to be wary of firms that email you out of the blue.
Google’s spam policies also list “buying or selling links for ranking purposes” as link spam. So a proposal that promises a fixed number of backlinks each month should worry you, whatever it costs.
Our own list
- Asks for your passwords, or for owner or administrator access on day one.
- Offers to create your analytics or ad accounts in its own name.
- Will not let you meet the person who will do the work.
- Shows results without dates, sources or a client you can contact.
- Reports only rankings and traffic, never enquiries or revenue measures you agreed.
- Wants a long lock-in or a large payment up front.
- Cannot tell you what it will change on your site, or will not share the list of changes.
One more, easy to miss: an agency that agrees with everything you say. The partner worth having tells you, in writing, when they think you are wrong.
Questions owners ask.
Is it safe to hire an Indian SEO agency for a US or UK business?
It can be, if you control the risks that matter: accounts stay in your name, the agency gets least-privilege access, personal data is kept to a minimum, payments are monthly and the contract assigns IP to you. Those protections make any agency safer, wherever it is based.
How much working time will I share with a team in India?
On plain office days, London shares three and a half hours in winter and four and a half in summer. New York and Los Angeles share none unless someone extends their day. With an agreed Pune window until 21:00 IST, New York gains one and a half to two and a half hours.
What access should I give an offshore SEO agency?
Start with Viewer or Analyst in Google Analytics 4 and Restricted user in Search Console, using named invitations, never shared passwords. Raise access only for a specific task, keep administrator and owner roles inside your business, and remove every agency user when the contract ends.
Do I need a data transfer agreement with an Indian agency?
If you are in the UK or EU and will share personal data, probably yes. India has no EU adequacy decision and no UK adequacy regulations, so a safeguard such as the UK IDTA or the Addendum to the EU clauses is usually needed. Ask your adviser, and share as little personal data as possible.
How do I check an agency’s reviews and badges are real?
Read reviews on the platform where they were written and look for a verified label. Check partner badges in the issuer’s own directory. Ask for every result’s source and both date ranges, then ask to see a live report on a call or to speak to a current client.
