Are pop-ups or cookie walls blocking AI engines from our pages?

Check what a crawler receives, not what you see after clicking “accept”. A full-page consent wall, a gate in front of facts or a bot challenge can mean the engine reads the wall instead of your page.

Effort: 1 to 2 hours to check

Who does it: Marketing lead, with your web developer

Best for: B2B firms with consent tools, chat widgets, gated content or bot protection

Evidence: Early (Google Search Central guidance, read 8 November 2026)

01 / WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters.

Crawlers that do not run scripts read the raw HTML. If a consent tool or gate replaces your content on the server, or a bot challenge answers instead of the page, that is what gets read. Google’s guidance is direct: “Don’t obscure the entire page with interstitials” and “Don’t redirect the user to a separate page for their consent or input” (read 8 November 2026).

We grade this Early: no study yet measures pop-ups and AI citations directly. The checks are cheap, and the same walls cost human enquiries.

02 / SELF-CHECK

The 10-minute self-check.

On your three most important pages:

  • Open each in a private window. What covers it before you click anything?
  • Fetch the raw HTML (curl, or view source). Is the main text there, or a consent or challenge page?
  • Is anything buyers ask AI about, such as your method, results or pricing approach, behind a form?
03 / STEPS

Steps.

  1. Use a consent banner, not a full-page wall, and make sure it never removes content from the HTML.
  2. Exempt verified search crawlers from bot-challenge pages in your CDN or firewall.
  3. Ungate the facts. Keep case-study summaries and your method public; gate only the extras such as templates and full PDFs.
  4. Delay pop-ups and chat prompts until a visitor has engaged; never cover the page on load.
  5. Re-test after any change to your consent tool, CDN or security settings.

These checks are part of our conversion rate optimisation reviews, because the same walls stop human enquiries.

05 / MEASURE

How to measure it.

  • Raw HTML check: pass or fail per key page, after every change.
  • Crawler status codes: monthly (play 26).
  • Human signal: engaged sessions and key events on pages where you removed a wall.
07 / SOURCES

Sources.

What the engines say across repeated runs, which sources they read and who they name instead is harder to see from inside. Our free AI Visibility Snapshot runs a sample of your buyers’ questions and is reviewed by a person.
