How do we connect AI-referred leads to closed revenue?

Make sure the source of every contact reaches the deal, then report closed-won value by original source each quarter, with AI Referrals as its own row. Read it as a floor: many AI-influenced buyers arrive without a referrer.

Effort: 4 to 8 hours

Who does it: CRM admin, with marketing and sales

Best for: B2B firms that record deal values in HubSpot or Salesforce

Evidence: Strong (HubSpot Knowledge Base, updated 4 August 2026)

01 / WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters.

HubSpot’s Original Traffic Source property “displays the first known web source through which a contact interacted with your business”, and it now includes an AI Referrals value, with the AI platform’s domain, such as chatgpt.com or claude.ai, as the first drill-down (HubSpot Knowledge Base, updated 4 August 2026).

It works only when a referrer or UTM tag survives. Visits that arrive with neither land in Direct, so any AI revenue figure from a CRM is a floor, not the full effect. Pair it with the self-reported source (play 37).

02 / SELF-CHECK

The 10-minute self-check.

In HubSpot (or the equivalent fields in your CRM):

  • Filter contacts by Original Traffic Source = AI Referrals. How many are there?
  • Of those, how many are associated with a deal?
  • Can you report closed-won value by original source for last quarter, today, without a spreadsheet?
03 / STEPS

Steps.

  1. Make sure your tracking code is on every page and that your forms pass the visitor’s source into the CRM.
  2. Copy the contact’s original source and first drill-down onto the deal when it is created (a workflow does this), so deal reports can group by it.
  3. Add the self-reported source property from play 37 to the deal as well.
  4. Build one report: closed-won value by original source, this quarter against last, with AI Referrals as its own row.
  5. Remember that original source is first touch only. Use attribution reports for the full path.
  6. Review AI-sourced deals with sales each quarter: what did the buyer ask, and what did the engine say?

05 / MEASURE

How to measure it.

  • AI-sourced pipeline: opportunities and closed-won value with original source AI Referrals, quarterly.
  • Coverage: share of deals with an original source other than Direct or Offline.
  • Self-reported AI: deals where the buyer said AI played a part, against those the CRM credits to AI.
07 / SOURCES

Sources.

  • HubSpot Knowledge Base, Understand traffic source properties, updated 4 August 2026.
  • Anonymised client (a US corporate team-building company), HubSpot closed-won by original traffic source, Q2 vs Q3 2026 (screenshot on file, account name blurred), supplied 8 November 2026.
  • Prolinkage change ledger, forms-pack-1 (hidden tracking fields), 6 November 2026.
