Why it matters.
You cannot work this out from Google rankings alone. Grow & Convert tested 100 buying-intent prompts (study updated 30 March 2026) and found that only 27% of the sources ChatGPT cited ranked on Google for the fan-out queries, and only about 40% appeared anywhere in the first ten pages of Google or Bing.
So the sources have to be read off the answers themselves. They tell you which lists, directories and articles the engines trust for your category, and whether those pages describe you.
The 10-minute self-check.
From your last three runs on Perplexity (it shows sources clearly), list the cited pages and answer:
- How many are “best” or ranked lists?
- How many are directories or review sites?
- How many are your own pages?
- How many mention you at all?
If the answer to the last question is zero, the problem is off your site, not on it.
Steps.
- Export or copy every cited URL per run into one sheet, with engine and date.
- Tag each URL by type: list, directory, review, press, forum, vendor page, your own page.
- Count how often each domain appears across runs. Sort by count.
- For the top twenty, mark whether they mention you, mention you correctly, or not at all.
- Turn the “not at all” rows into actions in categories 4 and 7, and the “incorrectly” rows into play 20.
A source review is part of our AI search visibility audit.

How to measure it.
- Source coverage: share of the top twenty cited domains that mention you. Quarterly.
- Source accuracy: share of those mentions with correct facts. Quarterly.
- New sources: domains cited this month that were not cited last month. Monthly.
