Why it matters.
Being mentioned consistently across the web is one of the strongest signals measured so far. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and reported on 26 May 2025 that branded web mentions had the highest correlation with appearing in Google’s AI Overviews (0.664), ahead of branded anchors (0.527), branded search volume (0.392) and backlinks (0.218). Ahrefs itself cautions that correlation is not causation.
Mentions only add up if they are recognisably the same company. “Acme Ltd”, “Acme Software” and “AcmeHQ”, founded in 2011 on one site and 2015 on another, read as uncertainty.
The 10-minute self-check.
Search for your company name on LinkedIn, two directories and your own About page. Write down, for each:
- The company name exactly as written.
- The founding year.
- The city and country.
- The names used for your three main services.
Any column with two different values is a fix.
Steps.
- Build a one-line fact sheet: name, founding year, location, service names, one-line description.
- Settle every conflict with evidence (incorporation papers, first invoice), not memory.
- Update your own site first, so the facts page (play 06) is the reference.
- Update each profile, starting with those the engines cite most (play 05).
- Log each change with the date, so a later disagreement can be traced.
Fact clean-up is usually the quickest win in our AI search visibility programmes.

How to measure it.
- Conflicts open: count of facts with more than one value across site and profiles. Monthly until zero.
- Engine accuracy: facts each engine states correctly when asked by name. Monthly.
- Change log: every correction dated.
