Why it matters.
Directories appear in AI answers often enough that the directories now sell visibility tools. Clutch said on 5 May 2026 that its Verified status “averages 8X more AI citations than free profiles”. It published no method, and it sells the upgrade, so treat the figure as a claim rather than evidence.
What is clear without that figure: when an engine cites a directory for your category, the profile it reads is the description of you that buyers see. If the profile is empty or out of date, that is what gets repeated.
The 10-minute self-check.
From your source review (play 05), take the directories cited for your category. For each one:
- Do you have a profile, and can you log in to it?
- Are the name, website address, founding year and services identical to your facts page?
- When was the last review added?
- Does the description say who you serve, in plain words?
Steps.
- Claim or recover the profiles on the directories the engines cite. Ignore the rest for now.
- Fill every field that buyers see, using the wording from your facts page (play 06).
- Ask two or three recent clients for a verified review. Ask; never pay for or script one.
- Remove old services, offices and taglines that no longer apply.
- Diary a quarterly check: facts, reviews, and any new field the directory adds.
Directory clean-up is one of the first steps in our AI search visibility programmes.
What we saw on prolinkage.com.
How to measure it.
- Directory citations: how often each directory is cited in your runs. Monthly.
- Profile completeness: fields filled and matching your facts. Quarterly.
- Review recency: date of the newest verified review per directory. Quarterly.
