AI Shortlist Plays / Profiles the engines read

Do our facts match across every profile the engines read?

Audit every profile the engines read against your facts page, fix every difference, and then re-test over the following months. Engines draw most of what they say about you from third-party pages, and they take time to pick up corrections.

Effort: 3 to 5 hours, then 1 hour a quarter

Who does it: Marketing coordinator

Best for: B2B firms of 20 to 500 people

Evidence: Medium (Ahrefs, 6 July 2026)

01 / WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters.

Ahrefs reported on 6 July 2026 that, for its own established brand, 94% of new mentions in AI answers came from third-party content and only 6% from answers citing its own pages. It also found that about one in four citations appeared once and never again, and that the longest unbroken run for any page was 52 days.

So your own site is the reference, but third-party profiles carry most of the weight, and the picture keeps moving. A one-off clean-up is not enough.

02 / SELF-CHECK

The 10-minute self-check.

Make a table: one row per profile (LinkedIn, each directory, partner listings, review sites), one column per fact:

  • Company name and website address.
  • Founding year and location.
  • Service names and one-line description.
  • Headline results, with dates.

Highlight every cell that differs from your facts page.

03 / STEPS

Steps.

  1. Fix your own site first, so there is one reference.
  2. Fix profiles in the order the engines cite them (play 05).
  3. Where you cannot edit a page, ask the owner for a correction and record the date you asked.
  4. Log every change with its date.
  5. Re-ask each engine “What is [company]?” monthly, and expect a lag before corrections appear.

A profile audit is part of every AI search visibility audit we run.

05 / MEASURE

How to measure it.

  • Open differences: cells in the audit table that do not match. Monthly until zero, then quarterly.
  • Engine accuracy: wrong facts per engine when asked by name. Monthly.
  • Correction lag: days from a fix to the engine repeating the new fact.
07 / SOURCES

Sources.

  • Ahrefs, self-promotional content and AI search experiment, 6 July 2026.
  • Prolinkage AI self-test (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview, one run each), 6 November 2026.
  • Prolinkage change log: Clutch and DesignRush profile corrections, 7 November 2026.
  • Prolinkage decisions log: GSC re-indexing requested; ChatGPT still quoting 4.17x, 7 November 2026.
