Why it matters.
On 8 August 2023 Google announced that FAQ rich results “will only be shown for well-known, authoritative government and health websites”. Its current guidance on AI features says there is “no special schema.org structured data that you need to add” to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
What remains is the format itself. A buyer’s question as a heading, answered in two or three plain sentences, is easy to match to a fan-out search and easy to quote. That is a reasoned expectation, not a measured effect, which is why the evidence grade here is emerging.
The 10-minute self-check.
Open your three most-visited service or article pages:
- Do they answer the questions prospects ask on calls?
- Is each question written as the buyer would ask it?
- Does each answer start with the answer, in the first sentence?
- Does the visible text match any FAQ markup word for word?
Steps.
- Take four to six questions per page from sales calls and Search Console queries.
- Answer each in two to four sentences. First sentence is the answer; the rest is the condition or the evidence.
- Cut questions that exist only to repeat a keyword.
- If you add FAQ markup, make it match the visible text exactly, and do not expect a rich result.
- Review answers every six months; stale answers are worse than none.

How to measure it.
- Passage citations: when an engine cites your page, which passage does it quote? Monthly.
- Search Console: question-shaped queries reaching the page. Monthly.
- Markup match: FAQ markup identical to visible text. Every release.
