How do we write sections that AI engines can quote as they stand?

Put the answer in the first sentence of each section, under a heading that matches the question it answers, with the number, date and source inside the same paragraph. A section that needs the rest of the page to make sense is hard to quote.

Effort: 1 to 2 hours per page

Who does it: Content writer or editor

Best for: B2B firms of 20 to 500 people

Evidence: Medium (AirOps, 12 March 2026)

01 / WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters.

AirOps reported on 12 March 2026 that of 548,534 pages ChatGPT retrieved, only 15% were cited in the final answer. Pages whose titles overlapped with the query by 50% or more were cited at 20.1%, against 9.3% for pages with under 10% overlap.

Being read is not the same as being quoted. Matching the question in the heading and answering it straight away gives the engine a passage it can lift whole.

02 / SELF-CHECK

The 10-minute self-check.

Pick one important page and read only the first sentence under each heading:

  • Does each first sentence answer the heading’s question?
  • Are numbers stated with their unit, date and source in the same paragraph?
  • Could each section be quoted alone without misleading anyone?
  • Do the headings read like questions or clear statements, not labels?
03 / STEPS

Steps.

  1. Rewrite each heading as the question or claim the section answers.
  2. Move the answer to the first sentence. Put context and caveats after it.
  3. Keep facts self-contained: “6.7x, 3.45K to 23.1K, last three months against the previous three, captured 4 September 2026” rather than “as shown above”.
  4. Split sections that answer two questions into two sections.
  5. Open the page with a two- or three-sentence short answer to the page’s main question.

This is the passage standard we use across our AI search visibility work.

05 / MEASURE

How to measure it.

  • Quoted passages: which sentences engines lift from your pages. Monthly.
  • First-sentence audit: share of sections whose first sentence answers the heading. Per page, at each edit.
  • Search Console: query match for each page’s main question. Monthly.
07 / SOURCES
